Could the Galactic disk heating be due to Globular Cluster impacts ?

چکیده
So far, six mechanisms have been proposed to account for the Galactic disk heating. Of these, the most important appear to be a combination of scattering of stars by molecular clouds and by spiral arms. We study a further mechanism, namely, the repeated disk impact of the original Galactic Globular Cluster population up to the present. We find that Globular Clusters could have contributed at most a small fraction of the current vertical energy of the disk, as they could heat the whole disk to σz = 5.5kms (c.f. the observed 18 and 39 kms for the thick and thin disks respectively). We find that the rate of rise of disk heat (α=0.22 in σz ∼ t α with t being time), is close to that found for scattering by molecular clouds.

Detecting the effect of Globular Cluster impacts on the disk of the Milky Way
The crossing of the Galactic disk by a Globular Cluster could produce star formation due to gravitational focussing or compression of disk material. We report on simulations of the effect on disk material which reveal that the crossing can sometimes cause local gravitational focussing of disk material. We also present the salient points of a little-known paper by Levy (2000), that shows that st...
متن کاملEvolution of the Galactic Globular Cluster System
We study the dynamical evolution of disk and halo globular clusters in the Milky Way using a series of Fokker-Planck calculations combined with parametric statistical models. Our sample of 113 clusters with velocity data is predicted to descend from an initial population of 250 clusters, implying more than a factor of two decrease in population size due to evolution. Approximately 200 of these ...
متن کاملThe Relative Age of the Thin and Thick Galactic Disks
We determine the relative ages of the open cluster NGC 188 and selected Hipparcos field stars by isochrone fitting, and compare them to the age of the thick disk globular cluster 47 Tuc. The best fit age for NGC 188 was determined to be 6.5 ±1.0 Gyr. The solar metallicity Hipparcos field stars yielded a slightly older thin disk age, 7.5 ±0.7 Gyr. Two slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = −0.22) field s...
متن کاملGravitational scattering of stars and clusters and the heating of the Galactic disk
Context. Could the velocity spread, increasing with time, in the Galactic disk be explained as a result of gravitational interactions of stars with giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and spiral arms? Do the old open clusters high above the Galactic plane provide clues to this question? Aims. We explore the effects on stellar orbits of scattering by inhomogeneities in the Galactic potential due to GM...
متن کاملConstraints on the mass and abundance of black holes in the Galactic halo : the high mass limit
We establish constraints on the mass and abundance of black holes in the Galactic halo by determining their impact on globular clusters which are conventionally considered to be little evolved. Using detailed Monte Carlo simulations, and simple evolutionary models, we argue that black holes with masses Mbh ∼ > (1 − 3)× 10 M⊙ can comprise no more than a fraction fbh ≈ 0.17 of the total halo dens...
